STUDIO 11:11

The Studio

11:11 is an award winning design studio operating in multiple disciplines across Australia, New Zealand and The Netherlands. Exploring the boundaries between architecture, interior design and objects, they create a body of work with one collective narrative. No matter the output, what defines every 11:11 project are the notions of functionality, simplicity and craftsmanship.

[Functionality] is the foundation of each concept. The studio aims to create purposeful objects and spaces that serve the end user. Their designs are not void of aesthetics, but resist trends in favour of practicality.

They believe that [simplicity] is achieved through a process of distillation and refinement, unveiling the essence of each project. A sense of calm is created through use of a natural and neutral palette and paired back forms.

Working with local artisans and using the finest materials, [craftsmanship] is approached with permanence in mind, but always embracing the natural patina of things over time.

The Team

[Annabel Smart] Founder & Director, Auckland

Annabel is an Architectural and Interior Designer with a unique and curated approach to creating spaces that harmonise both form and function, inspired by her passion for the natural world.

Heading up the Studio 11:11 Auckland office, she approaches her projects with a thoughtful consideration of materials, aiming to create serene, warm, imaginative spaces for people to inhabit. Annabel has a reserved design sensibility, an appreciation for a natural palette and highly considered detailing, which is prevalent in all her work.

After gaining her degree in Architecture from Victoria University of Wellington, she went on to work at leading design firms across both New Zealand and Australia, setting her up with the essential skills and distinctive design style she champions today. Annabel’s portfolio speaks volumes about her passionate approach to design. Her projects are a testament to her belief in timeless designs that elegantly blend into their surroundings, something she attributes to a quintessentially New Zealand mindset. Her contribution to the design scene was acknowledged when she was awarded the Emerging Designer Gold Pin at the 2020 Best Design Awards, Designers Institute of NZ.

Based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Annabel lives with her young son and continues to nurture the growing Studio 11:11 team.

[Marijne Vogel] Founder & Director, Amsterdam

Marijne is an Interior Architect with a strong commitment to creating thoughtful and emotive spaces. Drawing from years of holistic design research, human connection and experience is the hallmark of each project she undertakes.

Working across two continents, Australia and Europe, Marijne carefully considers the context of each project. Location, history and the client’s brief is what informs her design decisions. She harmoniously integrates materiality, subtle volumes and light into each space to trigger the senses and create clarity.

After completing her Interior Architecture degree at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK, The Hague), Marijne relocated to Melbourne to work for a leading design studio - putting her new-found vision and appetite for design into practice. Marijne’s professional experience allowed her to master her craft in both interior and product design, finding creative solutions in the blending of these two inspired disciplines.

Based in Amsterdam, Marijne collaborates closely with the New Zealand team, overseeing the Australian and European branches of the award-winning design studio.

[Nathan Varga] Associate Director, Wellington

Nathan is a licensed Design LBP with a collaborative and hands-on approach to design from concept to construction; he is always searching for local Taonga, talent and materials to showcase and celebrate through design, believing that each project must speak with authenticity of our places, our peoples and our stories.

His vision is to create meaningful, captivating and timeless spaces through uncomplicated geometry, natural materiality and atmospheric lighting, capturing the interwoven essence of client, brief and site. He has a strong focus on supporting local craftspeople and in showcasing materials and processes deeply connected to each project, its people and surroundings.

Nathan completed his studies in Interior Architecture at Victoria University of Pōneke Wellington, where he received a Bachelor of Design with Honours and an Excellence in Interior Architecture Award. Following his studies, he gained architectural training from studios throughout Aotearoa and Australia before settling in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland to focus on Interiors and enjoy Awards' success with other notable designers. Nathan's goal is to create elevated and captivating spaces which leave lasting impressions on those who inhabit, use and visit them; spaces which delight, enlighten and improve wellbeing.

Nathan is based in Pōneke Wellington where he hopes to contribute to the local architecture and design community while providing a great lifestyle and upbringing for his family of four.
